Does the IRS send receipts for estimated tax payments?

You have a choice – use your cash flow to pay quarterly estimates of $1,184 or when you do your IRA distribution, elect 12% withholding for federal taxes on your $40,000 IRA distribution. It is much easier to do the withholding on the IRA distribution than remembering to pay quarterly estimates. Not all taxable income is set up so that taxes are deducted at the source. Independent estimated tax contractors and freelancers, for example, typically do not have tax deducted from their pay. If you have any of theses types of income coming in, then you might need to pay estimated taxes during the year. Taxpayers who live in places subject to natural disasters should note that changes are subject to be made regarding the quarterly due dates for estimated tax payments.

Wage-earners and salaried employees can avoid estimated tax payments by having their employer withhold tax from their wages. To determine the right amount to withhold, use the Tax Withholding Estimator , available on IRS.gov. Then, based on its recommendations, they can use Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate, to tell their employer how much tax to withhold from their pay. Anyone can change their withholding any time during the year. For the 2018 tax year, estimated tax payments are due by April 17, 2018; June 15,2018; Sept. 17, 2018 and Jan. 15, 2019. You can pay early and even pay multiple times throughout a quarter, but if you don’t pay enough by the deadline, you may face a penalty.

Other Ways You Can Pay

You use Form 1040-ES to pay income tax, self-employment tax and any other tax you may be liable for. Corporations generally have to make estimated tax payments if they expect to owe tax of $500 or more when their return is filed. The IRS also announced Feb. 29 a new effort focused on high-income taxpayers who have failed to file federal income tax returns in more than 125,000 instances since 2017 with taxes being owed in many of those cases.

The mailings include more than 25,000 to those with more than $1 million in income, and over 100,000 to people with incomes between $400,000 and $1 million between tax years 2017 and 2021. Taxes are no fun, and remembering to pay estimates every quarter is a pain. With good planning, you can save time and money by adjusting your tax withholding instead of sticking those quarterly checks in the mail. You’ll also want to submit an estimated tax payment along with the extension request.

How we make money

The IRS reminds taxpayers seeking a 2020 tax refund that their funds may be held if they have not filed tax returns for 2021 and 2022. In addition, any refund amount for 2020 will be applied to amounts still owed to the IRS or a state tax agency and may be used to offset unpaid child support or other past due federal debts, such as student loans. Eligible individuals and families who earned $79,000 or less in 2023 can use IRS Free File on IRS.gov, to electronically file their taxes. But all taxpayers, regardless of income, who need more time to file a return can use IRS Free File as an easy and quick way to electronically file for a six-month extension before April 15, 2024.
